Department of Farm Power & Machinery
|
The Department of Farm Power and Machinery (FPM) started functioning from the 26 December 1964, with the objective of applying modern engineering knowledge to increase agricultural productivity, improve product quality and minimize losses through utilization of machines tools and power sources. Design, development and adoption of equipments, processes and systems suitable for the country concerning agricultural production and its management are also in the purview of this department's courses. The departmental courses are expanded to the fields of renewable energy, bioresearch systems and environmental impact assessment.
The Department offers courses for the degree of B.Sc. Agri. Engg., M.S. Agri. Engg and Ph.D in Farm Power and Machinery. It is one of the five departments under the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology. The department has a big workshop complex comprising a number of laboratories, workshops and other instructional and research facilities under the guidance of highly qualified teachers educated in the country and abroad. The undergraduate courses include basic subjects in design, operation and maintenance of farm machinery, agricultural product processing, refrigeration and air conditioning, rural electrification, engineering administration and management. In addition to these basic subjects' practical on workshop technology , computer science, thermodynamics, engineering mechanics and electrical engineering are the part of the curriculum. The M.S. program is based on course and research work, while the Ph.D. program is based on research work.
This department has facilities for testing and standardization of tractors, power tillers and other agricultural machinery. The teachers of the department are actively engaged in individual and coordinated research and development works having linkages with national, multinational and donor agencies/organizations.
Career Opportunities: The agricultural engineering graduates by virtue of their acquired knowledge and qualification are serving at various public and private sectors and NGOs of the country. They are making a substantial contribution towards nation building activities.
The various organizations where the graduates are working with reputation are: Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC), Rural Electrification Board (REB), Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), Pal li Biddut Samity (PBS), Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD), Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA), Technical School and College (TSC former VTI), Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Bangladesh Institute of Technology (BIT), Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC), Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI), Rural Development Academic (RDA), Bangladesh Krishi Bank (BKB), Agrani Bank and other Commercial Banks , Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Non-Governmental Organizations such as BRAC, PROSHIKA, RDRS others, Tea Estates, and Private Agri-business institutions.
Laboratory Facilities: The Department of Farm Power and Machinery maintains the laboratory and workshop facilities for its undergraduate, postgraduate, teaching, research, testing, training and service programs. A computer laboratory equipped with modern computers and printing facility is also available. The computer lab provides LAN facility to the staff members. The department has the following laboratories: Tractor testing laboratory, Pump testing laboratory, Engine testing laboratory, Tractor and Automotive Shop, Agricultural Machinery laboratory, Welding Shop, Machining & Fitting Shop, Foundry Shop, Carpentry Shop, Blacksmith Shop, Electrical Engineering Laboratory, Thermodynamics & Heat Engine Laboratory, Agricultural Process Engineering Laboratory and Computer Laboratory.
Collaborative Programs: The department has collaborative programs with government, institutions and manufacturers such as; BRRI, BARI, DAE, BARD, RDA, BCSIR, Janata Engineering, Mahbub Engineering; with international donors like EC, DFID, GTZ, IDEB and other NGOs. It also offers staff and curriculum development programs for teachers of other educational institutions like; PSTU, HSTU, SAU.
Research Projects: Completed Research Projects:The department has completed number of projects. In the recent past, REFPI, a DFID funded project of the department has created tremendous impacts on dissemination of agricultural equipment in the field. As a result some of the technologies are being locally manufactured and well adopted by the farmers of Bangladesh. Farmers are getting the benefits of these technologies.
On going research: 1. Integrated Approach for a Sustainable Wastewater Treatment and Biomass Production in Bangladesh (INAWAB). Asia Pro Eco Project No. 17. Funded by EC. 2. Extension and Dissemination of Direct Seeder to Rural Poor. Funded by BAURES, Bangladesh Agricultural University, P. No.2005/15/AU,2005-06. 3. Design and development of a wind operated aerator-cum-feeding device for Tilapia BAURES project no. 2005/16/AU, BAU, Mymensingh. 4. Engine Waste heat Utilization for Drying of Farm Crops. Funded by UGC
Ongoing Ph.D. Research: 1. Design, Development and Adaptation of Power Tiller Operated Potato Planter cum fertilizer applicator. 2. Designed & Development of Self Propelled Reaper for Rice and Wheat with Reverse Gear Mechanism. 3. Drying and Storage Properties of Mackerel: Solar Drying in Bangladesh . 4. Drying of Jack Fruit Lather in Greenhouse Type Solar Dryer
