
ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES BACK TO HOME
The University started functioning in 1961 with only 23 teaching departments grouped under 2 Faculties, namely, the Faculty of Veterinary Science and the Faculty of Agriculture, having a total of 30 teachers and 444 students only. A third Faculty, namely, the Faculty of Animal Husbandry was added a few months after the establishment of the University. The Faculty of Agricultural Economics & Rural Sociology, the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering & Technology and the Faculty of Fisheries started functioning with effect from the sessions 1963-64, 1964-65 and 1967-68 respectively. At present, the University has 44 teaching departments under six faculties, namely:
Faculty of Veterinary Science : Anatomy & Histology, Microbiology & Hygiene, Parasitology, Medicine, Pathology, Physiology, Pharmacology, and Surgery & Obstetrics.
Faculty of Agriculture : Agronomy, Soil Science, Crop Botany, Plant Pathology, Horticulture, Entomology, Agricultural Extension Education, Agricultural Chemistry, Biochemistry, Genetics & Plant Breeding, Physics, Chemistry, Languages, Agroforestry, Biotechnology and Environmental Science.
Faculty of Animal Husbandry : Animal Breeding & Genetics, Animal Nutrition, Animal Science, Poultry Science, and Dairy Science.
Faculty of Agricultural Economics & Rural Sociology : Agricultural Economics, Cooperation & Marketing, Agricultural Finance, Agricultural Statistics, and Rural Sociology.
Faculty of Agricultural Engineering & Technology : Irrigation & Water Management, Farm Power & Machinery, Farm Structure, Food Technology & Rural Industries and Computer Science & Mathematics.
Faculty of Fisheries : Fisheries Biology & Genetics, Aquaculture, Fisheries Management, and Fisheries Technology.
The University at its Bachelor degree level offers post-HSC courses of 4-year duration leading to the degrees of D.V.M., B.Sc.Ag., B.Sc.A.H., B.Sc.Ag.Econ.(Hons.), B.Sc.Agri.Engg. and B.Sc.Fisheries (Hons.). At the Master's degree level, a total of 35 teaching departments are engaged in conducting course-credit and research based programmes in 3 consecutive semesters leading to a total of 38 M.S. degrees, namely, M.S. in Anatomy & Histology, Physiology, Pharmacology, Parasitology, Pathology, Medicine, Surgery, Theriogenology, Microbiology, Vet. Public Health, Agronomy, Soil Science, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Horticulture, Crop Botany, Biochemistry, Agricultural Chemistry, Agril. Extension Education, Genetics & Plant Breeding, Animal Science, Animal Breeding & Genetics, Animal Nutrition, Poultry Science, Dairy Science, Agril. Economics (Production Economics), Agril. Economics (Finance), Agril. Statistics, Agril. Economics (Cooperation), Agril. Economics (Marketing), Farm Structure, Farm Power & Machineries, Irrigation & Water Management, Food Technology, Fisheries Biology & Genetics, Fisheries Management, Aquaculture, Fisheries Technology, Biotechnology and Environmental Science. Doctoral programmes are of full-time 3-year duration (extendable up to maximum 6 years), of which 2 consecutive years are to be spent in this University. At present, Ph.D. programmes are ongoing in 34 departments. The Committee for Advanced Studies & Research (CASR) is responsible for development, coordination and supervision of postgraduate teaching and research.
Fazilatunnesa Mujib Fisheries College is academically attached to the Faculty of Fisheries of this University, which is responsible for conducting examinations of their bachelor-level programmes leading to the degree of B.Sc. Fisheries. The College is located at Melandah, Jamalpur.
An outline of academic programmes of the University has been presented in Table 1 and the curricular layouts of Bachelor and Master's degree courses are appended in Appendix : A.

(a) Figure indicates degree and year-wise total marks of the courses offered by
the concerned department.
(b) Each student has to carry 100 marks for 'Project Work & Reports' under any
of the 4 departments with 1200 marks in total.
(c) Short courses on languages are offered under special arrangement.
