Bangladesh Agricultural University Extension Centre (BAUEC)

Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) was established in 1961. After one and a half decade since its inception, BAU took the initiative for generating and transferring technologies to the farmers to reorient its teaching and research programmes in the context of Bangladesh. To perform this job Agri-versity extension project was established in 1976 and subsequently renamed as BAU Extension Centre (BAUEC) in 1989 to construct a bridge between rural people and BAU. 

Working objectives

1.      To evolve an extension approach.

2.      T help the teachers and students of BAU for obtaining practical experiences from the farmers field.

3.      To organise training programmes for farmers and field level workers.

4.      To organize rural male and female family members in the societies to impure their living standards.

5.      To establish linkages with different GOs and NGOs for the development of farm, home and community. 

Working activities

BAUEC has organized one BAUEC Rural Savings and Welfare Society (BRSWS) in each village with six development targets. These are as follows: 

1) Field and horticultural crop development,

2) Cattle and poultry development,

3) Fisheries development,

4) Adult education,

5) Health and Family Welfare,

6) Rural Industries. 

BAUEC Management: To manage all activities of BAUEC there is a 14 members Governing Body headed by honourable Vice-chancellor of BAU. The BAUEC Governing Body deals with all policy making regarding annual budget, appointments, rules, regulation, evaluation, any external fund and MOU of the Centre etc. 

Main Achievements:

BAUEC evolved a holistic approach to meet different needs of farmers. To achieve these * BAUEC organized 29 male and female societies in 22 villages under Sadar Upazila. Total society members are 1147 and their total savings are 10,23,863. * A total of 30-60 different Primary and Secondary educational institutions are involved in BAUEC school vegetable programmes in every year for updating the agricultural knowledge of their students. * More than 15,000 cattle and 25,000 poultry birds have been vaccinated under the BAUEC vaccination programme. Near about 340 Vet. students along with related teachers of BAU participated in this programme as their practical class. * BAUEC supplied a number of poultry birds, eggs, goats etc. to the farmers for rearing to improve the standard of living of them. * A total of 32 printed materials on different issues of agriculture and related subjects have been published by BAUEC since 1976. 

Training programme: Since its inception, BAUEC organized a huge number of training programme on agricultural activities, rural development, sewing, Health and family planning and so many other fields. A total of 8491 trainees have received training from BAUEC so far. Different categories of trainees, such as women selected by UNICEF, field level workers, members of Ansar & Village Defense Party (VDP), Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB) women cooperators etc. have received training from this organization.
