Professor Dr. Md. Akhtar Hossain takes over as BAU Vice-Chancellor

Mymensingh, May 22:  Honorable President and Chancellor of the Universities has been pleased to appoint the distinguished educationist and scientist of international repute Professor Dr. Md. Akhtar Hossain to the post of Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU).

Professor Dr. Md. Akhtar Hossain on Wednesday took over as the new Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) a day after the President and Chancellor of the Universities entrusted him with the charge. Prior to joining the present position he was one of the senior most Professors of the same University in the Department of Surgery and Obstetrics holding the key position of the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science. Born in April 30, 1953, Professor Dr. Hossain comes of a noble Muslim family of the Village Dangipara under Shailakupa Upazilla  of  Jhenidah District. He is the only son of late Abul Hossain and late Vagirunnesa. He obtained First Class First both in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine(DVM)  and M.S. under the Faculty of Veterinary Science. He did his Ph.D.  from University of Edinburgh, UK in 1984.

He started his teaching career at the University level as a Lecturer in 1976, subsequently Assistant Professor in 1979 and Associate Professor in 1986 under the Faculty of Veterinary Science and was promoted to the rank of Professor in 1992. Professor Akhtar has to his credit over 55 research publications including popular scientific articles on agriculture in leading national and international Journals. Dr. Akhtar Hossain possesses an opulent background with a plethora of research exposure and quality national and international publications. He was Research Supervisor of more than 20 M.S./M.Sc students of the Faculty of Veterinary  Science.During his 32 years of his teaching, research and eventful career at BAU. Professor Akhtar  Hossain  had a vast administrative exposure by holding key academic and administrative positions in different local, national and international organizations throughout his professional career, namely BAU  Syndicate Member, Sylhet Agricultural University Syndicate Member, Founder Director of Veterinary Clinic, Provost Shaheed Shamsul Haque Hall, Head, Department of Surgery and Obstetrics three full times and Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Science and so on .

Currently Professor Dr. Akhtar Hossain is the President of Bangladesh Society For Veterinary Education and Research (BSVER). He was the President Bangladesh Veterinary Association, Member, Association of Veterinary Anesthetists of Great Britain, UK, Member, Association of Veterinary Teachers and Research Workers in Scotland, Senior Vice President and Joint Secretary of the Central Committee of Bangladesh Association For Advancement of Science.

He  is associated with various education and research, social, cultural, national and international  scientific and professional organizations. Dr. Akhtar Hossain and his wife Mrs. Dilruba Hossain are blessed with three sons. His eldest son Md. Tanvir Hossain, Senior Software Engineer, second son Md. Tauhid Hossain is a student of Computer Science and Engineering at the Janhangirnagar University and youngest son Md. Tahmid Hossain is a student of Class ten at K B High School. While taking charge at a simple function, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Akhtar Hossain in  his brief speech, appealed all teachers, students, officers and employees to work hard  and  selflessly for the development  of the University.  He specially drew attention to all concerned to help create congenial academic atmosphere for imparting higher education and sought cooperation from all quarters to run administration as well as academic programs of the University smoothly. Among others, outgoing Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Musharraf Hossain Mian , all Deans of Faculties, senior Professors, high officials of the administration, BAU Teachers' Association, Officers Association, Employees Association, Employees Prishad, Muktijoddah Sangsad Leaders and other members of socio-cultural organizations of the campus were present at the function.
